More Helpful Science Resources SCIENCE VOCABULARY Steam or water vapor is an example of a gas. You can also say they vibrate! Gas particles spread out to take the shape of the container they are put in. Gas: In a gas the particles move freely from one another. A liquid has no distinct shape of its own but will take the shape of a container that it is put into. Liquid: In a liquid, the particles have some space between them with no pattern and so they are not in a fixed position. Ice or frozen water is an example of a solid. You will notice a solid keeps its own shape. Solid: A solid has tightly packed particles in a specific pattern, which are not able to move about. WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE STATES OF MATTER? Although a fourth state of matter exists, called plasma, it’s not shown in any demonstrations. The three states of matter are solid, liquid, and gas. LOOK: Parts of an Atom WHAT ARE THE THREE STATES OF MATTER? Matter consists of tiny particles called atoms and it has different forms depending on how the atoms are arranged. ![]() Thermal expansion: The expanding of matter when it is heated. What is matter? In science, matter refers to any substance that has mass and takes up space. As the thermal energy of matter increases, its particles spread out and the substance expands.Condensation: A change from a gas state to a liquid state.Boiling: VAPORIZATION OCCURS UNDER THE LIQUID.Evaporation: If vaporization takes place AT THE SURFACE OF A LIQUID.At a substances freezing point, the particles of a liquid are moving so slowly that the particles freeze into place. Freezing: the change of state from a liquid to solid. At a substances melting point, the particles of a solid are vibrating so fast that they break free of their fixed position. Melting : The change of state to a solid to a liquid. ![]() Matter can change from one state to another when thermal energy is released. The particles can move about freely.Ĭhange of State: The physical change from one state of matter to another. Gas:Matter that has no definite volume or shape. The particles in a liquid are not fixed, and can move about. Liquid: Matter with no definite shape, but a definite volume. This is caused by fixed, closely packed together particles. ![]() Solid: Matter with definite shape and volume.
